Visitors who are blind or with visual impairments Without becoming familiar with old cultures, our present word is hardly understandable. Records of past ages have come down to us in a tangible way, in the form of objects characteristic of said culture. Most exhibition materials have been unavailable for blind visitors or with visual impairments so far. Because of the objects featured in them being of exceptional value and very easily damaged, traditional exhibitions have been available only for sighted people, and the Hungarian National Museum would like to change this situation. That was the main idea behind the programme 'See it by touch!' Within the historical and the archaeological exhibitions, we have formed a touchable, audible and olfactable gallery for visitors who are blind or have visual impairments. 30 items have been placed in the Historical and 20 items in the Archaeological exhibition. The touchable items are identified by sign and information in English and Hungarian printed in Braille can also be found next to the articles. Self-guided touch tour is also possible for those who would like to explore the exhibition on their own. For these visitors, assistive audio guide sets are available, by which they can move safely in the exhibition area and enjoy the freedom of experiencing the masterpieces. Our assistive audio guides are equipped with three voice systems, which are distinguished by different tones. The first one is an audible map, which helps visitors with visual impairments to navigate and explore the exhibitions on their own. The second voice gives a general description on the epoch displayed in the current room. The third voice tells about some interesting facts connected to the interactive shows. Visitors who are blind or have visual impairments and their guides can obtain the MP3 players free of charge. With its help, they are able to explore the exhibition with a speed that fits best for them. Parts can be omitted or played repeatedly - this way the exhibition can be visited part by part, or several times. (The visitors can pick the parts that interest them to be uploaded to the device!) There are two types of audio guides; one for blind people navigating without help, while the other one is for visitors who have an escort. |
